Abstract

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of regular 12-week exercise program (sport dance) on depression symptoms, the quality of life, and flexibility in climacteric women.

Methods : The research design was a quasi-experiment design with non-equivalent control group pre-and post-test. A convenience sample of 44 climacteric women aged 4060 who had above-moderate level climacteric symptoms were selected in Mokpo City, Korea. Twenty-three of those were assigned to the experimental group and the rest were assigned to the control group. Subjects in the experimental group were asked to participate in one-hour sport dance program, at least 3 times a week for 12 weeks. The intensity of the exercise ranged from 50% to 70% of maximum heart rates.

Results : Depression symptoms were measured using depression measurement instrument developed by Zung(1974), Quality of life was measured by self reporting method Quality of life measurement instrument developed by Ro You-Ja(1988) and the Flexibility were measured trunk flexion and trunk extension. Data collection was done from March 10, 2001 to June 30, 2001. Data were analyzed by f-test, Fisher¢¥s exact test, Wilcoxon rank sum test, and Wilcoxon signed rank test procedures, using SPSS/win 10.0 PC¢¥.

The results were as follows;

1. No statistically significant differences were found between the two experimental group and the control group in demographic, obstetrical and physical characteristics before the exercise program.

2. There were no significant differences in the depression symptoms, the quality of life, and flexibility before the exercise program between the experimental group and the control group.

3. There was significant decrease in the depression symptoms in the experimental group compared to those of the control group(z=-3.104, p=0.002).

4. There was significant increase in the quality of life in the experimental group compared to that of the control group (z=-3.152, p=0.002) .

5. The increases in the flexibility of the trunk extension in the experimental group was significantly higher compared to the control group(z=-2.726, p=0.003). However, no significant differences was observed in the changes of the trunk flexion (z=-1.380, p=0.084) between the experimental group and the control group.

Conclusions :In summary, regular long-term exercise program (sport dance) was effective in decreasing depression symptoms and in improving of the quality of life and flexibility in climacteric women. We recommend addition of such exercise program in climacteric intervention programs.
